Hi Sandhya - Great to know that you've been using books as tools to teach your daughter. It makes our job a lot more interesting and easier. Also, when reading with kids, so many new questions come up that we both end up learning a lot together!

I have an eight-yr old girl, and have been doing this for a long time- going to a book to explain something to her. Somehow I always felt it was easier to get across the topic at hand with a book. Your post validates this belief. Thank you so much.

@Mindi - Thanks so much. Isn't it amazing how not a single day passes without kids teaching us something? I enjoyed your last post about spending time doing activities with kids on B.A.Bookworm.
@Lara - That book sounds very moving. Thank you for sharing.

The first book that comes to mind is 14 COWS FOR AMERICA by Carmen Agra Deedy. Here is the "blip" we have at GUWB (www.growupwithbooks.com).

In June of 2002, Kimeli returns to his village and the Maasai people in Kenya to share the tragedy he experienced on September 11, 2001 as he was in New York City. Kimeli’s heart was pierced by this horrible event in history and was moved to share his sacred cow with aching American hearts. Not only does Kimeli offer his only cow, others join in. It will be hard to finish this story with dry eyes. May we be humbled by these gracious givers from Kenya and learn lessons from them. *Just a Heads Up: This story has a direct connection to September 11, 2001.

*With any title that may have an issue of concern, we post a "Just a Heads Up."

Thanks again for our new friendship!

Thank you, Lara. Reading your post inspired me to finish this one which had been in my draft for a week. If you know of any specific children's titles in this regard, please do share them.

Beautiful post! I love how you share the idea of using books to discuss difficult issues. What a great way to have a conversation about a tricky topic...you can talk about the characters and choices that they made. Do you agree with them? What could you have done differently, etc. Thank you for sharing and linking to "Beyond Blessed." It's been wonderful meeting you as well.
