Thanks, Anu! You have people criticizing you for teaching your kids your mother tongue? Wow, I haven’t experienced that myself but isn’t it strange that parents are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on foreign language classes for kids but don’t share the same passion for their own mother tongue which kids can pick up effortlessly at home? I can’t imagine someone intentionally not passing on their language to their kids. As for finding kids speaking Tamil w/o the influence of English – I’d be surprised if you found any! The best we can do is observe and improve the way we speak to kids. After all, kids do tend to imitate parents until a certain age.

Hi, I came here from Tulika’s blogathon – I agree with what you have written – and you have written it well! I am happy to find several parents who are keen to teach their children the mother-tongue instead of merely appreciating their English and encouraging them with only one language (here in the mid-west I have had a lot of cynicism and questions about the purpose of insisting on the mother-tongue for my children).
I think it might be a good idea to provide a way for our children to chat with other Tamizh speaking kids on a regular basis, say by Skype. I am tired of having to deal with Madras-Tamizh speaking kids – the language has much more English than Tamizh!
